Mixed Media Encaustic Art – June 23rd
Saturday, June 23rd from 2 – 5pm
Learn the art of encaustic wax! Join local artist Jenn Leighton to create luminous layered effects on wood using beeswax, resin and heat. In this three-hour class, students will learn the basic techniques of encaustic wax, layering collage elements, incorporating stamping, stenciling and more.
All materials, wooden boards, and lots of collage materials will be provided, but students are welcome to bring images that you would like to use in collage, or to serve as inspiration (drawings, photocopies, etc). Want to create super personalized pieces? Come prepared with photocopies of family photos or your children’s art to incorporate into your piece! Each student will leave with their own completed art piece on a wooden panel, as well as a “practice” panel used for getting acquainted with the techniques.
Encaustic is an ancient media used to decorate ships in ancient Greece and mummy portraits in Egypt. Contemporary artists have revived the media, experimenting with a variety of styles. The possibilities for depth, color and texture are limitless.
No experience is required.
This class is suitable for beginners.
All materials are included.
We’ll also provide beer, wine, hot tea, sparkling water, or juice. Must be of age to receive alcoholic beverages.
About our teacher:
Jenn Leighton is an Oakland-based artist and arts educator. She has earned a BFA in painting and an MA in Art and Religion. She teaches art at Castro Valley High School, as well as small workshops here at Mischief. Layers and texture are important elements in her work, and inspiration is found within natural elements, vintage drawings, playful child inspired designs, religious symbols, and language: specifically ASL (American Sign Language, her parents are deaf). Creating art is such an important part of Jenn’s life- she loves to help her students tap into their creative spark.
