Itajime Shibori – July 15th
Sunday, July 15th
from 11:30 – 1:30
Itajime Shibori is an ancient Japanese dyeing technique that involves folding, twisting, or stitching, and then compressing cloth using a wide range of methods, then dyeing it in indigo to create beautifully patterned textiles.
With Itajime (Shape-Resist) Shibori, the patterning is created by folding and compressing fabric using a variety of tools like clamps, clothespins, and even wooden shapes. The compressed areas resist the dye, creating beautiful patterns and color variations. Shibori dyeing is truly an amazing craft, as every piece you dye is a little bit of a surprise.
All materials are included.
All materials are included, but feel free to bring a couple of your own small items to use up our dye bath: must be a natural fabric (cotton, linen, or silk), and please no large items (no bedding, duvet covers, curtains, etc).
Small class guaranteed.
Max enrollment is limited to 10 students per session, so register while there’s still room!
About our teacher:
Rajni Kavula is the artist and maker behind Adroit’s beautiful Indigo-dyed clothing and accessories, which you might have seen here at the shop. She has a degree in fine arts, and started her handmade journey with crochet, then later hand dyeing, though she is always learning and experimenting with new techniques. She mostly works with natural fabrics like linen, rayon, silk, and cotton yarn, as sustainable living is so very important in times like these. Rajni also teaches our Fiber Jewelry and Batik classes- learning new techniques has been such a wonderful experience for her, and she hopes to pass on that joy to her students!
